U.S. Department of Labor announces grant exceeding $316,000 to assist workers in Maine affected by automotive industry layoffs

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $316,458 grant to assist approximately 80 workers affected by layoffs at Formed Fiber Technologies Inc. located in Auburn, Maine.

"These workers now will have access to employment-related services that will lead to new careers in promising regional industries," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "Auto workers have borne the brunt of the recent economic downturn and are deserving of our support as they seek re-employment."

Awarded to the Maine Department of Labor, this grant will be operated by the Central/Western Maine Workforce Investment Board. The grant will provide affected workers with access to dislocated worker services. These services may include skills assessment, basic skills training, individual career counseling and occupational skills training.

A Maine Department of Labor analysis indicates possible future job vacancies outside of the traditional manufacturing industry in more promising sectors.

Layoffs at Formed Fiber Technologies Inc. occurred on Dec. 19, 2008, due to declines in the automotive, construction and marine industries.

This grant will be funded by resources made available for National Emergency Grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
