U.S. Department of Labor announces more than $1.6 million to continue to assist Illinois workers impacted by statewide layoffs

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $1,624,000 National Emergency Grant increment to continue to assist Illinois workers impacted by layoffs and plant closures at 31 companies across the state.

"The Labor Department is committed to helping the people of Illinois access the training and employment services they will need to re-enter the workforce in growing industries," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "As we advance toward national economic recovery, it is important that workers have the right skills for employment in promising careers."

This second and final increment will be awarded to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Funds will be used to continue the delivery of re-employment assistance, including training, assessment, career counseling and case management to affected workers.

On Oct. 23, 2008, a National Emergency Grant with an initial release of $1,624,000 was awarded to serve approximately 3,884 workers. The state's application for the increment announced today was received on June 17, 2009, and brings the total award to $3,248,000.
