U.S. Department of Labor announces a grant exceeding $254,000 to assist workers affected by paper industry layoffs in Maine

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $254,516 grant to assist approximately 73 workers affected by layoffs at Wausau Paper Specialty Products LLC located in Jay, Maine.

"Today's grant will provide affected workers with supportive services, such as career counseling and retraining, in new occupational fields that will enhance their eligibility for re-employment," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

The Maine Department of Labor will receive the grant to provide affected workers with dislocated worker services. All workers targeted for services under this grant also have been certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). The grant will provide them access to services not available through the TAA program, including skills assessment, counseling, case management, job search assistance, job placement assistance and follow-up. Workers will have access to training that focuses on entrepreneurship, apprenticeships and regional job opportunities in stable or growing occupations.

On Aug. 25, 2008, Wausau issued a public notice announcing layoffs on Dec. 13, 2008. Wausau is one of the largest employers in Franklin County, Maine.

The Central Western Maine Workforce Investment Board will operate the project.
