U.S. Department of Labor announces $6 million in aid to help California recover from recent wildfires

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $6 million grant to the state of California to fund approximately 353 temporary jobs to assist with continued cleanup efforts following the 2008 Southern California wildfires.

"This $6 million grant will fund temporary jobs for workers to help communities cleanup and recover from the southern California wildfires," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

On Nov.18, 2008, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared the following counties as eligible for FEMA's Public Assistance Program: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and Santa Barbara.

This grant, awarded to the California Employment Development Department, will create temporary employment to assist in cleanup and recovery efforts. Funds also will be used for projects that perform work on the homes of individuals who are eligible for the federally funded weatherization program, with priority given to services for the elderly and individuals with disabilities.

Of the $6 million awarded today, $2 million will be released immediately. Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for disaster assistance.
