ESA Press Release: United Technologies Receives Highest Honor for Affirmative Action Efforts; Labor Department Recognizes Nine Others for Outstanding Affirmative Action Efforts [10/01/1998]

Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman today presented United Technologies of Hartford, Conn., with the Opportunity 2000 Award for its outstanding efforts to hire and promote women, minorities, the disabled and veterans. The secretary also acknowledged nine other companies and public interest organizations with Exemplary Voluntary Efforts (EVE) and Exemplary Public Interest Contribution (EPIC) awards.

Secretary Herman recognized United Technologies for its "Corporate Leadership in Action" and its history of progressive equal employment opportunity programs that have enhanced the quality of life for its employees.

"These awards acknowledge companies who go the extra yard for equal opportunity in the workplace and, more significantly, they show that some of our largest corporations realize that equal opportunity is good for the bottom line," Herman said. "Ending discrimination and breaking the glass ceiling is a key commitment of this administration. We should reward those companies that employ and promote women, minorities, the disabled and veterans."

The Labor Department's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs holds the EVE Award ceremony annually to acknowledge corporations and public interest groups that strive to improve diversity in the workplace. This year's corporate EVE winners include Chrysler Corporation of Detroit, Mich.; SAS Institute of Cary, N.C.; Steelcase Inc. of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Eli Lilly of Indianapolis, Ind.

The Exemplary Public Interest Contributions awards were awarded to Esperanza Unida of Milwaukee, Wisc.; Partnership for Women and Families, Washington, D.C.; the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc., New York City, and TOP/WIN of Philadelphia.

Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Employment Standards Administration Bernard E. Anderson, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor Shirley J. Wilcher also joined in today's ceremony held in Washington. The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs is a division of the Employment Standards Administration.

In announcing this year's recipients, Secretary Herman said: "These corporate leaders and organizations truly are making sure that we as a nation keep our pledge to be One America with equal opportunity for all. These leaders know that equal opportunity is good for business. Working together, I am confident that we can guarantee every worker a fair workplace, free from discrimination."
