US Department of Labor will host free compliance forum in Wellesley, Mass., on June 20, 2014

Forum will emphasize responsibilities and rights under federal labor laws

BOSTON — The U.S. Department of Labor is hosting a free compliance seminar, "How to Do It Right the First Time," at MassBay Community College on Friday, June 20, from 8:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. EDT. Representatives from the department's Employee Benefits Security Administration, Employment and Training Administration, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, Wage and Hour Division and Women's Bureau will make presentations outlining their responsibilities and activities. Attendees will then break into a series of workshops focusing on specific workplace topics.

"It's difficult for employers to comply with laws if they're unfamiliar or unclear about them. This seminar is an opportunity for them to obtain solid, clear information and ask questions of and receive answers from the professionals who enforce these laws," said Susan Hensley director of EBSA's Boston Regional Office, which is coordinating the event. "As the title says, we want you to get it right the first time."

Topics to be covered in the workshops include the following:

  • Choosing a retirement solution for a small business;
  • Complying with the Employee Retirement Income Security Act and the Affordable Care Act;
  • Educating employees about savings fitness and short- and long-term financial goals;
  • What happens during an OSHA inspection — whistleblower protections for employees;
  • Protecting workers against heat illnesses;
  • Complying with the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act;
  • Information about federal equal pay laws and promoting and ensuring equal pay; and
  • Maximizing mature workers as a unique workforce resource.

The seminar will be held at MassBay Community College, 50 Oakland St., Wellesley Hills, MA 02481. On-site registration begins at 8:15 a.m. EDT. Attendance is free, but seating is limited, so attendees are requested to register by email by June 18 at ebsa.boston@dol.gov with "ATTN: Employer Forum" in the subject line.
