Department of Labor Kansas City Regional Director Retiring After 39 Years of Federal Service

Kansas City, Missouri - Gregory P. Egan, regional director of the Kansas City Office of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA), will retire on July 3 after 39 years of federal service. As the Regional Director, he managed a region covering over 10 states from Wyoming to Missouri and the southern portion of Illinois, overseeing both investigations into civil and criminal violations of Title I of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and an extensive regional outreach, education and assistance program.

After graduating from St. Louis University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in labor relations in 1964, Egan began his federal career with the Internal Revenue Service in St. Louis, Missouri, transferring in January 1965 to the U.S. Department of Labor. He worked for 10 years as an investigator and then became a manager. In 1979, Egan was named area director in the St. Louis Area Office and in 1985 was selected to lead the Kansas City Region of the Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration, which was renamed EBSA in February 2003.

During his tenure as Kansas City’s regional director, Egan has been known for his positive management style that encouraged creativity and independent thinking among his managers and their staff. This has resulted in positive recognition by his peers, his staff and the local employee benefits community. Under his leadership, the Kansas City Regional Office consistently produced significant recoveries for participants and beneficiaries. He has run a balanced program of criminal and civil investigations resulting in tens of millions of dollars in prohibited transactions corrected and plan assets recovered. He also was a pioneer in the development of the agency’s Outreach, Education and Assistance program, implemented to reach out to and assist plan participants, employers/plan sponsors and ERISA professionals.

In recognition of his accomplishments, Egan has received many awards including the Elliot I. Daniel Award, EBSA’s highest honor bestowed on an agency manager, in 2000.

Assistant Secretary of Labor Ann L. Combs said, “Greg leaves a legacy of strong leadership -- a management style that year in and year out has resulted in the successes of individual employees in the office. Under his direction, the Kansas City Regional Office has been an integral part of the agency’s efforts to protect workers’ benefits and provide compliance assistance to employers and other plan officials.”

Egan and his wife will be moving back home to St. Louis to spend time with family and friends.
