Former Georgia Training Fund Coordinator Pleads Guilty To Embezzlement

Atlanta, Georgia - The former apprenticeship coordinator for the Asbestos Workers Local Union No. 48 Joint Apprenticeship Training Fund in Atlanta, Georgia, pleaded guilty on March 18 to two counts of embezzling $39,957 from the fund to benefit himself, according to the plea agreement filed in federal district court in Atlanta.

Tony Mancel Davis is expected to be sentenced June 2, 2003, and faces a maximum prison sentence of five years on each count and $250,000 in fines. As part of the plea agreement, Davis agreed to make full restitution to all victims affected by his action, pay a mandatory special assessment of $100 and be subject to supervised release not to exceed three years.

A criminal information filed in the case charged Davis with embezzling and converting to his own use $8,310 in assets from the fund to pay for food and beverages, clothing and trips and receiving $31,647 in illegal salary advances, duplicated salary, and overtime payments from June 1998 to October 2001. The fund has approximately 200 participants and $56,000 in assets.

The case was investigated by the Atlanta regional office of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration.
