ERISA Advisory Council Meeting To Follow Its Working Groups' Final Testimony Gathering On Their Topics

The Advisory Committee on Employee Welfare and Pension Benefits will hold open an public meeting at the U.S. Department of Labor on Sept. 12, at which chairs of this year’s working groups will update the full committee on the status of their deliberations. The 1:30 p.m. session as well as the preceding working group meetings will take place in Conference Room N-5437 A-C at the department’s Frances Perkins Building at 200 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20210.

At the full Advisory Committee meeting, Leslie B. Kramerich, the Acting Assistant Secretary for the Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration, will provide a legislative and regulatory update on retirement and health issues.

The working group studying the issue of phased retirement will meet on Sept. 11 at 9:00 a.m. to complete taking testimony about such programs.

From 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, the long-term care (LTC) working group members will hear testimony on expansion of LTC insurance and future Medicaid expenditures as well as a summary of legislative proposals before Congress.

The working group studying benefit continuity after organizational restructuring will hear from employees regarding their experiences during their companies’ mergers, acquisitions and other kinds of organizational changes. The Sept. 12 session will begin at 9:00 a.m. and run until approximately noon.

Persons wishing to appear before the full Advisory Committee or any of the study groups on either Sept. 11 and 12 or wishing to submit written statements on this year’s topics may contact Executive Secretary Sharon Morrissey in Room N-5656, Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration, Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20210. If written statements are to be provided, 20 copies must be sent to Ms. Morrissey before Sept. 4. The ERISA Advisory Council is comprised of 15 members from statutorily-specified subject areas in employee benefits and related fields. Members, serving staggered three-year terms, must provide the Labor Secretary with policy recommendations and reports relating to private pension and other employee benefit issues. The advisory committee was established by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

This year’s working groups expect to have their studies and subsequent reports and/or recommendations completed by the scheduled final meeting of the year on Nov. 14, 2000.
