ERISA Advisory Council's Working Groups To Meet June 1 And 2

The three study groups formed by the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Employee Welfare and Pension Plans will continue taking testimony at the June 1 and 2 sessions to be held in Conference Room N-5437 A-D of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Frances Perkins Building at 200 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20210.

The Phased Retirement Working Group, chaired by Carl Camden and vice chaired by Richard Tani, will meet June 1 from 9:30 a.m. to noon to hear testimony concerning workforce demographic trends and current practices regarding phased retirement plans.

The Working Group on Long-Term Care: Issues and Solutions, with Michael J. Stapley as chair and Patrick McTeague as vice chair, will focus on long-term care indemnification in the marketplace today. Subtopics will include: Who purchases long-term policies? What services are typically included? What do they cost? What factors influence cost? How can policies be made more affordable to the consumer? The session will be held June 1 from 1:00 p.m. until approximately 3:30 p.m.

Chair Rebecca Miller and vice chair Janie Greenwood Harris will convene the Benefit Continuity After Organizational Restructuring Working Group June 2 from 9:30 a.m. until noon. The members will hear about the legal framework governing employee benefit plan continuity during organizational restructuring (mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs, etc.) and ramifications for these plans under Title 1 and 2 of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

All three chairs will report the progress of their committees’ studies at the 110th full ERISA Advisory Council meeting on June 2 at 1:00 p.m. Members also expect to be updated on the status of proposed regulations and programs by Leslie Kramerich, Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for the Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration.

The ERISA Advisory Council is comprised of 15 members who represent specific subject areas in employee benefits and related fields. Members serve staggered three-year terms and have an explicit charter to provide the Labor Secretary with policy recommendations and reports relating to private pension and other employee benefit issues. Council members will be meeting monthly to work on their topics and are expected to present their findings Nov. 14 at the final session for the year.
