EBSA Press Release: ERISA Advisory Council and Working Groups to Meet in June [05/27/1998]

The Advisory Council on Employee Welfare and Pension Benefit Plans, more popularly known as the ERISA Advisory Council, and its three recently-formed working groups will hold public meetings June 8 and 9. All sessions will take place in Conference Room N-4437 C&D at the U.S. Department of Labor's Frances Perkins Building, 200 Constitution Avenue NW, Washington, D.C.
On June 8, the subcommittee on disclosure of information on the quality of health care plans will meet from 9:30 a.m. until noon and the working group on how to enhance and encourage the establishment of pension plans will conbee from 1 - 3:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, June 9, the work group on pre-retirement distributions, including in-service distributions and participant loans from employer-sponsored pension plans, known in the pension benefits community as "leakage," will meet from 9:30 - noon. All three groups will meet periodically for the next six months and will present their findings to Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman by the full council's final meeting, Nov. 13.
The full Erisa Advisory Council will conclude its two-day working sessions with a progress report on the three committees' issues and a briefing on current events in the department's Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration, which administers Title I of the Employee Retirement Income Act (ERISA) and provides administrative support to the Secretary's advisory group. The final session is at 1p.m.
Individuals or organizations wishing to address issues being studied by the individual working groups should contact Sharon Morrissey, executive secretary, ERISA Advisory Council, U.S. Department of Labor, Suite N-5677, 200 Constitution Ave., NW, Washington, D.C., 20210 before June 2. Oral presentations are limited to 10 minutes, but witnesses may submit extended statements for the record.
Members of the public who do not wish to testify before the individual groups, but who want their statements included as part of the official proceedings may submit 20 copies of their statements to the above address. Individuals with disabilities who need special accommodations to attend the meeting, should contact the department by June 2 at the address above.
The Advisory Council is a bipartisan group of 15 members appointed by the Secretary of Labor to represent a wide range of interests in the employee benefits area. The council advises and makes recommendations to the secretary on the administration of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA).
