Archived News Release — Caution: Information may be out of date.

Washington DC - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced the agenda of the 2002 National Summit on Retirement Savings that will run from February 27 to March 1, 2002 at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C.  The Summit will focus on “Saving for a Lifetime: Advancing Generational Prosperity.”

“The President and I are dedicated to ensuring working Americans’ long term retirement security.  The SAVER Summit is an important forum for Congress and this Administration to identify and encourage new ways to promote employee retirement savings and security,” Chao said.  “President Bush has announced his proposal to strengthen America’s private pension system to give workers greater choice, confidence and control of their own retirement savings.  We look forward to working with Congress to enact these reforms for the benefit of working Americans.”

The 2002 Summit, mandated by the Savings Are Vital To Everyone’s Retirement (SAVER) Act, is co-hosted by Congressional leaders and the Secretary of Labor.

On February 27, 2002, the Summit will begin with a reception for delegates at the U.S. Botanical Garden.  Chao, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and others will make remarks on February 28, 2002.  The Department will host a Congressional breakfast on March 1, 2002.

Delegates will examine ways to educate the public about retirement planning and focus on the issues affecting economic prosperity across generations.  In breakout sessions, the delegates will work on action plans designed to address generational issues of the Millennial Generation in Youth, ascendancy of Generation X to Adulthood, Baby Boomers in Midlife and the Silent Generation in Elderhood.

The full agenda of the 2002 Retirement Savings Summit is scheduled to be published in the February 6, 2002 Federal Register.
